SASR (Sassersson's Abstract Shape Representation) is a set of minimalist graphics for chess diagrams in SVG and PNG format. Graphics are designed for a nominal square size of 64 by 64 pixels.

SASR 1.1 contains 33 different piece types, enough to display these games (and others that use their pieces):

Pieces

w b w0 b0 Name Description
white pawn black pawn P — pawn The pawns are the only SASR pieces whose design are not based on their movement. This lets them represent whatever "pawns" a particular game uses (shogi, xiangqi, Ultima, draughts...)
white knight black knight white knight (reversed) black knight (reversed) N — knight Like its move, the knight is composed of three squares in an "L" shape. "0" pieces are for diagrams from Black's point of view. (Also for xiangqi/janggi and shogi version.)
white rook black rook R — rook The sliding pieces are composed of crosses and saltires pointing in their directions of movement.
white bishop black bishop B — bishop
white queen black queen Q — queen
white king black king K — king The king is round to contrast with the blocky pieces. The eight-pointed star represents its crown and its directions of movement.
Betza "atoms"
white wazir black wazir W — wazir Rook and bishop limited to one square, portrayed as small four-pointed stars to contrast with those pieces.
white ferz black ferz F — ferz
white dabbaba black dabbaba D — dabbaba These "jumping" pieces are constructed similarly to the knight. The knight jumps 2 and 1, the dabbaba jumps 2 and 0, the camel 3 and 1, and the zebra 3 and 2. (Non-jumping zebra is the elephant of janggi.)
white camel black camel white camel (reversed) black camel (reversed) C — camel
white zebra black zebra white zebra (reversed) black zebra (reversed) Z — zebra
white alfil black alfil A — alfil / elephant The alfil jumps 2 and 2, making it difficult to use the same pattern. Instead, it has four "tusks" pointing to its directions of movement. May also represent xiangqi's non-jumping alfil.
Compounds
white man black man M — man / wazir-ferz Compare to the king's "crown". This is simply a standard piece with the movement of a king.
white rook-knight black rook-knight white rook-knight (reversed) black rook-knight (reversed) RN — rook-knight Of the popular knight-compounds, this is the design I'm most satisfied with.
white bishop-knight black bishop-knight white bishop-knight (reversed) black bishop-knight (reversed) BN — bishop-knight The other two popular knight-compounds get a hole signifying knight movement.
white queen-knight black queen-knight white queen-knight (reversed) black queen-knight (reversed) QN — queen-knight
white king-knight black king-knight white king-knight (reversed) black king-knight (reversed) KN — king-knight / man-knight May or may not have the duties of a king.
white rook-ferz black rook-ferz RF — rook-ferz The promoted sliders of shogi.
white bishop-wazir black bishop-wazir BW — bishop-wazir
