SASR (Sassersson's Abstract Shape Representation) is a set of minimalist graphics for chess diagrams in SVG and PNG format. Graphics are designed for a nominal square size of 64 by 64 pixels.
SASR 1.1 contains 33 different piece types, enough to display these games (and others that use their pieces):
- Chess
- Chess with RN+BN (Capablanca, Freeling, et al.)
- Xiangqi
- Janggi
- Shogi
- Makruk, sittuyin, and other close chaturanga relatives
- Courier chess
- Many historical and regional chesses
- Draughts/checkers

---|---|---|---|---|---|
P — pawn | The pawns are the only SASR pieces whose design are not based on their movement. This lets them represent whatever "pawns" a particular game uses (shogi, xiangqi, Ultima, draughts...) | ||||
N — knight | Like its move, the knight is composed of three squares in an "L" shape. "0" pieces are for diagrams from Black's point of view. (Also for xiangqi/janggi and shogi version.) | ||||
R — rook | The sliding pieces are composed of crosses and saltires pointing in their directions of movement. | ||||
B — bishop | |||||
Q — queen | |||||
K — king | The king is round to contrast with the blocky pieces. The eight-pointed star represents its crown and its directions of movement. | ||||
Betza "atoms" | |||||
W — wazir | Rook and bishop limited to one square, portrayed as small four-pointed stars to contrast with those pieces. | ||||
F — ferz | |||||
D — dabbaba | These "jumping" pieces are constructed similarly to the knight. The knight jumps 2 and 1, the dabbaba jumps 2 and 0, the camel 3 and 1, and the zebra 3 and 2. (Non-jumping zebra is the elephant of janggi.) | ||||
C — camel | |||||
Z — zebra | |||||
A — alfil / elephant | The alfil jumps 2 and 2, making it difficult to use the same pattern. Instead, it has four "tusks" pointing to its directions of movement. May also represent xiangqi's non-jumping alfil. | ||||
Compounds | |||||
M — man / wazir-ferz | Compare to the king's "crown". This is simply a standard piece with the movement of a king. | ||||
RN — rook-knight | Of the popular knight-compounds, this is the design I'm most satisfied with. | ||||
BN — bishop-knight | The other two popular knight-compounds get a hole signifying knight movement. | ||||
QN — queen-knight | |||||
KN — king-knight / man-knight | May or may not have the duties of a king. | ||||
RF — rook-ferz | The promoted sliders of shogi. | ||||
BW — bishop-wazir | |||||
Regional | |||||
J — general (xiangqi) | King with a wazir "crown". | ||||
CA — cannon (xiangqi) | A rook that leaps over other pieces when capturing. | ||||
KIN — gold general | Wazir-ferzes with directions removed as appropriate. | ||||
G — silver general / eastern elephant | |||||
L — lance (shogi) | Elongated pawn, representing its capability to make any number of (shogi) pawn moves in one turn. | ||||
GKIN — silver promoted to gold | Promoted minor pieces in shogi. | ||||
NKIN — knight promoted to gold | |||||
LKIN — lance promoted to gold | |||||
PKIN — pawn promoted to gold | |||||
SHI — lion (chu shogi) | Extremely powerful "double king mover". | ||||
Miscellaneous | |||||
BP — Berolina pawn | The "reverse pawn" that moves diagonally forward and captures straight forward. | ||||
NR — nightrider | Popular piece that makes repeated knight moves in one direction. | ||||
V — diagonal cannon / "vao" | A bishop that leaps over other pieces when capturing. | ||||
DAM — draughts king | Represents two stacked draughts. Can also be used for other "leaping" pieces, like the "grasshopper". |
